Today I signed up for Hello Fresh after seeing ads for over a year and here is my honest review. There are several different meal delivery subscription services to pick from, but I chose Hello Fresh because of this session (the baby’s dad works for Hello Fresh).
I signed up for the Family Plan (2 meals, 4 servings each) before looking at the menus and then realized that the date/week I picked had menu choices that I knew we wouldn’t like. Since I couldn’t change it online because it was our first order, I had to call Hello Fresh customer service. After talking to a very helpful service representative, our first delivery date was set. The two recipes that I picked were Honey Hoisin Beef and Great Grape Pork Chops, and I was excited to see two options that were both dairy-free and egg-free.
On the day of our delivery from Hello Fresh, I was a little disappointed that the box didn’t arrive in time for me to prepare it for dinner (5:30pm). It wasn’t a big deal and I’m sure Hello Fresh doesn’t have that kind of control over our UPS driver.
Upon opening the box, this is what I saw:
The recipe cards were on the top and then the food was enclosed in a nifty thermal bubble wrap bag with a bag of ice. I saved this thermal bag and used it for some of my cold groceries today. In the bag, the ingredients are packed together neatly in a smaller box so I knew exactly which food went with each recipe. The meat was packaged separately and labeled well.
The first recipe we tried was the Great Grape Pork Chops with baby broccoli and sweet potatoes. I liked the simple recipes with step by step photos. It was helpful that there were photos included of each ingredient, since I haven’t used things like ginger and shallots before. The directions were easy to follow, and I just had to add a bit of olive oil to the mix-everything else was included. Here’s a photo of the grape salsa:
Here are my veggies, fresh out of the oven: (I have to say that the broccoli wasn’t my favorite, and I usually like broccoli…I think there was too much stem for my liking.)
Here’s the finished plate:
Everyone in our family (2 adults and 4 kids) tried this dish, but none of us were crazy about it. The oldest ate it willingly, kids #2 and 3 ate it reluctantly, and kid #4 really didn’t eat it at all (he’s got issues so his opinion doesn’t count at the moment). Neither Justin or I liked the grape relish…it was just too weird for us. Not a bad taste, just too different. All in all, not a meal I would want to eat again.
Our second meal was the Honey Hoisin Beef with Bok Choy over Rice. I had high hopes for this recipe and thought that Justin would really like it. Again, the recipe card was simple and easy to follow with great photo illustrations. I’ve never used fresh ginger, bok choy or sesame seeds before. Here’s my finished plate:
The reaction from my family to this dish was similar to the first dish: it was okay but not something we wanted again. For me, the ginger was way too overpowering for my taste buds. I know I’m not that adventurous or daring, but even Justin said these recipes were not our style of food. I guess we are just boring when it comes to food. I felt that the “family box” should have been even more friendly toward kids, although it is clear that they are trying. It was nice that they have a good amount of recipes that are free of various food allergens.
All in all, I really liked the idea of the Hello Fresh meal delivery subscription, but I did suspend my account for now. At $70 for 2 meals (4 servings each), it just wasn’t in our budget. That is the main reason I won’t be getting another delivery anytime soon. I think Hello Fresh would be great for busy families who don’t have a lot of time together to eat, as well as singles or couples who need quick and easy meal options.
